The region that now forms Markapuram District was part of the vast territories influenced by the Satavahana Empire, one of the earliest and most powerful dynasties in the Deccan. The Satavahanas ruled from approximately the 1st century BCE to the 3rd century CE, bringing political stability, economic prosperity, and cultural development across present-day Andhra Pradesh. Owing to its strategic location near the Nallamala Hills and important inland trade routes, the Markapuram region played a significant role in connecting the interior Deccan with the eastern coastal plains.

The Satavahanas promoted agriculture by encouraging irrigation and the cultivation of fertile lands surrounding the region. Trade routes passing through the Markapuram area facilitated the movement of agricultural products, forest resources, textiles, and other goods, contributing to the growth of local settlements and markets. The forests of the Nallamala region also provided valuable timber, medicinal plants, and other natural resources that supported the regional economy.

The dynasty was renowned for its patronage of Buddhism and Hinduism, fostering religious harmony throughout their empire. Although Markapuram is best known today for its later medieval temples, the surrounding region witnessed the spread of Buddhist culture during the Satavahana period. Archaeological discoveries such as ancient coins, pottery, inscriptions, and artifacts found in nearby areas indicate the influence of Satavahana administration and commerce across this part of Andhra Pradesh.
